Siglio Advocate 2019

Your support keeps Siglio going!

Last year Siglio celebrated its 10th year of fiercely independent publishing, driven by its feminist ethos and its commitment to artists and writers who obey no boundaries, pay no fealty to trends and invite readers to see the world anew by reading word and image in provocative, unfamiliar ways. Since its inception, Siglio has seen publishing itself as an act of resistance to the literal, the authoritarian and the facile (see the Siglio manifesto “On the Small and Contrary”).

This year we continue that mission with a new collaboration with the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans. Hinge Pictures: Eight Women Artists Occupy the Third Dimension is an artist’s book in eight parts—a gorgeous, palimpsestual publication and a site of experimentation that layers the work of eight women artists over the pages, history, and framework of Marcel Duchamp’s imagination. We are also releasing a second, expanded paperback edition of John Cage’s Diary: How to Improve the World (You Will Only Make Matters Worse) (link is to the original hardcover edition) that includes a new essay as well as selections from Cage’s notebook for an unfinished ninth part that has never been reproduced before.

Siglio Advocates receive both books before they’re available in bookstores or elsewhere online, and this year Advocates can choose a third book (from any in-print titles) to round out the subscription.

Subscribers not only get the substantial discounts and free shipping, but they also contribute to the health and longevity of the press. A subscription is a vote of confidence in the year’s list: it helps helps immensely with the impending printer and production bills, while also fortifying the project of Siglio as a whole in ways that, while less concrete, are no less essential. Siglio Advocates evince the belief Siglio is built on—that there are readers who are drawn to books that are deeply resistant to algorithms, easy categorization, and seven-word tag lines, books by artists and writers that are truly risk-taking and thought-provoking. Siglio Advocates help us fulfill our mission to publish exactly these kinds of books.
